The past 7 days have just been one of those weeks.
You know the one…the week where you had all these goals planned out and then you fall face first right onto your beautifully laid out calendar.
Yeah, my hand is raised super high for this one. Last week, I sat down and wrote out my weekly goals like I normally do. However, when the end of the week rolled around, I realized I had not accomplished any of the goals I had made for myself. What happened to my carefully planned calendar? What happened to the last seven days of my life? The world may never know.
A busy Sunday quickly came…I needed to be at church at 8:30am for practice, sign a song for the first service at 9:30am, leave the first service to do nursery duty, sign a song for the second service at 11:00am and then there was a family lunch at 12:30pm. You want to know who was responsible for bringing deviled eggs to lunch? If you guessed me, you guessed correctly! Yep, this girl. I was responsible for bringing deviled eggs to lunch.
I was really excited about this too, I LOVE deviled eggs.
And this particular time, I was even more excited about them than I normally am. You see, while I was out of town, I stumbled into this little antique shop. And it was there, hiding on a table, that I found this beautiful glass deviled egg plate. I bought it and packaged it safely in a suitcase for the 1,000 mile ride home.
I had big plans for this plate and couldn’t wait to use it for the first time at my family lunch. In my mind, I could just see the deviled eggs sitting on this beautiful glass plate.
Sunday morning came and I had still not made the deviled eggs.
And let me tell you, I was stressed out over these little things. I set an alarm for 7:00am thinking I could make them before church. That didn’t happen, of course. By the time I arrived at church for practice at 8:30am, I had probably already come up with 100 different ways I could go home, make deviled-eggs, and still be on time for church. I finally settled on the idea of leaving church after I signed for the song during the second service.
I signed for the first service, went to work in the nursery (and played with some amazing 1 year olds), and came back to the main building to sign for the second service. When I came down from the stage after signing the second time, it just kinda hit me…
Jesus is more important than deviled eggs.
Jesus is more important than deviled eggs. Click To TweetI know it seems like a really simple concept, but my spirit felt so overwhelmed by this thought.
I was about to trade the glory of God to make deviled eggs.
For a brief moment, I placed these deviled eggs, in my heart, above Jesus. Could I have gone home and live-streamed the service while I made these eggs? Sure. Do I experience the presence of Jesus in the kitchen? Yes! But in this moment, I was already where God was moving. Surely I could take another 30 minutes to focus all of my attention on the Lover of my soul.
Did the deviled eggs get made? No. But I can always make deviled eggs. I cannot re-create an action of the Holy Spirit.
How often we do this in our daily lives! So many things come up and there is the tendency to push Jesus to the back-burner and say, “I will come back to you”. And so many times, we exchange fellowship with our loving Savior for things that do not matter in the grand scheme of eternity.
In Luke 10, we see the story of Mary and Martha. In scripture it says,
And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat a Jesus’ feet, and heart His Word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to Him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her” Luke 10: 39-42 (KJV)
Here, He is gently saying, “You only need one thing, and that is me”.
Today, have you exchanged the glory of God to “make deviled eggs”?
I know I have done this over and over again. But I am so thankful for a Savior that patiently and relentlessly pursues us and draws us to himself!
