If you are reading this post, I can’t help but assume that there is some brokenness in your life.

And before we go any further, I want you to know that it is okay. It is okay to be broken. I give you permission to fall apart. In fact, I believe some of the most beautiful things happen when we are so shattered beyond our ability to repair. 

I’ve been there. I know what it feels like to have a broken heart and a shattered soul. You and I may not be going through the same struggles, but along my journey, God has shown to me a couple verses that have helped me during my seasons of brokenness. I want to share them with you today, from one broken sister to another.

3 Verses For Your Brokenness

1. Psalm 147: 3-5

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of the stars and gives to all of them their names. Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; His understanding is beyond measure.” Psalm 147: 3-5 (ESV)

I’m just going to take a second and say that I absolutely love these verses. When I sit back and imagine this verse playing out, I am filled with the calmest sensation. In my mind, I am picturing God, the one who numbered the stars and thoughtfully gave them each a name, tenderly and carefully binding up my wounds. Just take a moment and think about that! The Maker of the stars, the Commander of the seas, the One who created every single individual cell within your body cares enough to take the time to bind up your wounds.

There are 3 things that stick out to me about this verse:

• He gave names to the stars. This sticks out to me because it shows the thoughtfulness that God has toward His creation. He cared enough to name each star. There are over 100 billion stars in our galaxy alone! Yet they each have a name, chosen for them by their creator. If God took enough thought to name 100 billion + stars, just think about the kind of tenderness and love He must have toward you, a human being that He created in His image. You  have been adopted and chosen by Him.
• A response of praise. This verse helps cultivate a response of praise within my heart. It helps me remember that even when I am broken and in need of some serious mending, He is still worthy of praise. He is still God and He is still powerful, “Great is our Lord, and abundant in power”. His goodness and His faithfulness do not change when I feel like my life is falling apart.
• He understands. I cannot express how much comfort this gives to my heart, “His understanding is beyond measure”. He gets it. He knows what it is like to be alone. Jesus experienced betrayal. His body was brutally tortured and He was shamed as He selflessly hung naked in our place. He was called a hypocrite. Jesus experienced separation from His Father. He was stressed out, tempted, ridiculed, and forsaken. Our precious precious Jesus. He is acquainted with every sorrow and every pain.

2. Psalm 73:26

My flesh and heart may fail, but God is the Strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:26 (ESV)

My flesh and heart may fail. In fact, they do fail. Over and over again. Sometimes, I feel so broken over my sin or my circumstances that I quite honestly just want to give up and throw in the towel. I don’t feel strong enough to overcome the brokenness in my heart. Sometimes, I do not even feel brave enough to face that giant pile of broken pieces inside of me.

But here, He is saying that He is the strength of my heart, not Cassidy. Jesus. We will fail, and unfortunately, we will find ourselves broken time and time again. However, He is saying that He is the strength of our hearts. When we lean on our own strength, we will crumble.

In the very last part of the verse, we read something that I feel like is overlooked so much. “He is my portion forever”. He is your portion. He gives us himself, and in Him, He has given us everything we need to thrive and be made whole. He created our hearts to be satisfied by Him and Him alone. The world may break your heart, but the love of God is more than able to mend it and make it whole.  

3. Psalm 121:1-3

I lift my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber.” Psalm 121:1-3 (ESV)

There is so much in this verse that jumps out to me, so lets unpack it.

• You need to lift your eyes. Here, the Psalmist actively lifted up his eyes. He was searching and had not given up. In your brokenness, do not give up on yourself. You can find healing and you can find strength. But first, you must lift up your eyes. He isn’t going to hide himself from you. This verse reminds me of Isaiah 26:3 that says, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because He trusts in you”. Lift up your eyes and place them on Jesus.
• Your help comes from the maker of heaven and earth! Wow, the one who made heaven and earth cares enough to help you in your brokenness. The God of the entire universe cares about what is going on in your heart and in your life. I know that whenever your heart is so shattered that it can feel as if He is not there. But He is. I promise. Lift up your eyes. Seek out your Abba, Father and He WILL make himself known to you. One verse that I think ties in here so well is Deuteronomy 33:26 which says, “There is none like God, O Jeshurun, who rides through the heavens to your help, through the skies in His majesty”. He rides on the heavens to help you! And I promise, He has no shortage of power.
• He will not let your foot be moved. In Him, you are steady. In Him, you cannot be shaken. I feel like this is so important to grasp because I know how it feels to be so broken and shattered. In those moments, I feel so fragile and like it wouldn’t take much to just blow me away. But here, He is saying that He will not let your foot be moved. In His strength, you will not be shaken. What a comforting thing.
• He who keeps you will not slumber. I love this part of the verse so much because it shows the kind of vigilance He has in helping us. Because of His watch, we can safely fall apart and have the ability to heal. His love and care never take a pause. He is there, always. Even when your world is falling apart, He is working in the background for His glory and your good.

4. Matthew 11:28-29

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29 (ESV)

I know, I know. I said 3 verses. But, I just couldn’t help myself.

I think this verse is so beautiful and I wanted to add it in here. This is an invitation from Jesus. He isn’t going to force you into His arms. But, He says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden”. Is that you today? Are you carrying around a heavy burden? Is your heart broken? Are you in need of rest in your soul? Right now, are you tired, weary, or just want to give up? He is talking to you. Pick up all those broken pieces of your heart. Stick them in a bag and drag them behind you if you need too and place them at the feet of Jesus.

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” All you have to do is come. You do not need to have your life together. It doesn’t have to look pretty with a nice, big bow on top. No. He just simply says to come. He will take care of the rest. In the presence of Jesus, you will find rest for your souls. “He restores my soul” Psalm 23:3.

Is your heart broken today? Is your soul shattered? He binds up the wounds of the brokenhearted. He is our strength and our portion. The Maker of the universe rides on the heavens to help you and will not rest as He keeps you in perfect peace. All you have to do is come.

Just remember, it is okay to be broken. But, you can have victory over your brokenness. Jesus makes that possible.
